The History of Tsukiji Market

If you know anything about the Japanese seafood industry, one name that should feature strongly in your mind is that of the Tsukiji Market. This is a grand seafood market in Tokyo, one that has served as the most important place in the country where fish are bought and sold.

The Tsukiji Market traces its origins all the way back to 1657. This was the time of the Great Fire of Meireki, a devastating fire that destroyed many homes throughout the lands of Edo. The Tokugawa Shogunate needed some place to relocate all of the displaced people, so they established a settlement on the coast where the citizens could have easy access to the food provided by the ocean. Since a portion of the land had to be reclaimed from Tokyo Bay, the market that was built atop it was named “Tsuki-ji”, or “constructed land”. This market flourished, and has remained a central part of the fishing industry to this day.
