Roughly translated into English, “itadakimasu” means “I receive this food humbly and with appreciation”. It is a ritualistic phrase that comes from Buddhist traditions, from which Japan derives much of its culture. According to Buddhist teachings, it is important to have respect for all living things, even the plants and animals you dine upon. Therefore, prior to a meal, one must give thanks to the creatures that gave their lives to provide the food you are about to eat, as well as the cook who prepared the food, the farmer who grew it, the host who purchased it, and anyone else who may have contributed to it.
