Everybody Loves Teriyaki!

Do you love teriyaki? Is a hot, savory serving of sauce-coated rice and meat the first thing that springs to mind when you feel like going out for Japanese food? If so, you will not be disappointed at Flo’s Japanese Restaurant and Sake Bar in Bellevue.

The word teriyaki is created from the pairing of two Japanese words: teri describes the shiny quality of the sauce, and yaki is the word for the grilling method that is used in preparing the meat. The sauce itself is a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, sake, and mirin. Teriyaki likely came about sometime in the seventeenth century, when roasting and grilling techniques were gaining popularity in Japan and increases of urbanization marked an increase in demand for quick, simple food that could be sold in the streets. Teriyaki was one of the first Japanese foods to be accepted in America, and continues to be a quintessential part of Japanese cuisine to this day.
